Bony Tony Mission

The labor of death. How a skeleton puppet helped me cope with quarantine, isolationism, grief, mourning and the pandemic.

Bony Tony is a skeleton and puppet. A dead entity. Bony Tony represents death in visual form. If you could see death, it would look like Bony Tony. Complete with sparkling red hat and bowtie as was part of his original costume. As a representation of death, the performance and embodiment of this character is challenging and rewarding both. Sometimes even cumbersome as I have promoted Bony Tony as a social media influencer and creative force for good for many years now. To have a Bony Tony mission seemed a natural progression of my work with him. If I am to embody death when performing the character, I should have a reason for doing so. Performing in the darkness of life can have consequences and having an intention and purpose helped align the character with my own values.

Bony's purpose - to help ease the pain and taboo of death as a topic for conversation and well-being. By acknowledging and discussing death, we are able to process and accumulate knowledge of our reaction to the topic as a means for health and healing in a real-time feedback loop. To create engaging and uplifting experiences where people and puppets interact to establish a layer of understanding between the conscious and subconscious mind.

This occurred in a great wave of interest and demand for Bony Tony during the pandemic. While the rest of the world went into lock down mode, I was gifted the opportunity to run a small puppet animation studio and produce Bony Tony segments that were being watched more than ever. Bony Tony's time had seemingly come. It was now the moment for him to produce some of his most effective work. While the world was mourning, Bony Tony was there.

Many partners are still needed. I have reached out to establish partnerships within the industry of palliative and hospice care, including an interview with Stephen Jenkinson on the topic of discussing death with children. I am also now a trained Hospice of the Valley facilitator.

Great care must be given to how the youth perceives a representation of death in a physical form. Bony Tony is a responsibility. I take my work with Bony Tony very seriously as a means of communicating compassion to the world. The youth need to experience radical forms of self expression with positive intentions.

Carrying the character of Bony Tony has been a mission of mine for 23 years now. Meeting the Skeleton Puppet Theater troupe in 1999, led me down a path of creative discovery and collaboration.

Collaborations have included such people as Creator, Writer and Puppeteers Pete DesRosiers, Character Designer - Georgann Prince, Musician - Randy Greer, Costume Designer - Ruth Anne Greer and many others including Cinematographer - Brian Thorsen, Musician - Paul Boruff, Art Director - Todd Shealy, Fabricator and Partner - Ryan Gallagher, Photographer - David Dupree, Jim Burk, Nicole Clemetson, Paul Markow and many other amazing artists in their own right. Also should be mentioned is Animator Daniel Fleck who created the underground tomb scene with ghosts, bats and spirits. All collaborators are owners of copyright as stated in the credits of each program developed and published by Imaginology.

There is an entire town of characters we have brought to life over the years. Brock Buttman (Randy Greer) has perhaps the most public exposure, having been the man on the streets and reporter for KRAPTV13. His personae engaged him with the fascinating characters and TV moments including Comicon and Roller Derby.

We have explored very little of what's possible with these characters and stories and look forward to further development. We need your support now more than ever!

Bony Tony and Stephen Jenkinson Discuss The Future of Now and Speaking With Children About Death

A very special episode of The Afterlife With Bony Tony.

After a short hiatus, Bony Tony is back with more of what you love. Death, taxes and grief...right!? Yer killin' me! Yer killin' me!!

Bony Tony has been hard at work establishing a better understanding of how this generation of humans cope with their mortality. Although 2020 was especially challenging for many humans, Bony was there for you and even hosted a Halloween Experience to help our friends work through the some of the anxiety, pain and anguish that the year provided.

Although 2021 has been a small step forward in the global condition, we are still experiencing what Stephen Jenkinson would refer to as "plague times". The man is what few can carry as a title of "grief walker". An individual dedicated to the realities and impending fate of all humans, that is so easily pushed aside or considered taboo to talk about. AKA Bony Tony's favorite topic.

Stephen is a worker, author, storyteller, culture activist, and founder of Orphan Wisdom, a teaching house for skills of deep living and making human culture that are mandatory in endangered, endangering times.

Bony was fortunate to catch Mr. Jenkinson at his teaching house Orphan Wisdom in Ontario for a cup of tea and to wax the word realistic with the man who speaks Bony Tony's language of death, dying and grief processing.

The Afterlife Experience

Phoenix artists present interactive installations and performances in honor of the dead

Local Phoenix artists and creatives have come together to produce an interactive art experience that celebrates, explores, and honors the ideas of death, grief, and remembrance. The Afterlife Experience premieres to the public on Halloween night, Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Grand Arthaus in the Grand Avenue Historic Arts District of downtown Phoenix. A collaborative project, local Phoenix artists have created an interactive art experience that will guide visitors through levels of the Afterlife where they’ll virtually interact with a variety of installations. An experiential journey of art, acknowledgment, and acceptance, the Afterlife invites guests to move between the threshold of celebration and ceremony, between laughter and reflection.

The artists of the Afterlife Experience have created a transformational one-night only live, interactive, and live steamed Halloween event that will span the spectrum of expectations. From taking a picture with a skeleton puppet to exploring sensory stimulation, confronting death, immersing yourself into a room of virtual emotions, or participating in a healing ceremony.

Produced by Imaginology Founder and Chief Imaginologist, Nathaniel Jack Greene, the experience is an evolution of the Afterlife with Bony Tony, a puppet character who has been hosting Halloween shows in the valley for decades.
“The year has been strenuous on humanity to say the least. The demand for the program seems oriented to a feeling of being grateful, celebrating those we lost this year, and healing through suffering we have experienced throughout 2020. Bony Tony will still greet guests as the host of the Afterlife, but the program intention has evolved to greater purpose.” - Nathaniel Jack Greene
Visitors to the Afterlife Experience will also BECOME a part of the show, as each installation or level of the Afterlife, is live stream broadcasted on social media. This creates an alternative “quarantined” Afterlife experience for those watching from home.

Mark your calendars for this one-night only, Halloween engagement, produced by the artists, architects, musicians, and creatives of Phoenix. Additional information, RSVP, and link to purchase tickets can be found on the event Facebook event page: https://bit.ly/AfterlifeExperience

This is a limited capacity event. To ensure entrance into The Afterlife Experience, advanced tickets can be purchased online. Limited availability at the door. The Afterlife Experience was made possible by the generous support of Imaginology, Grand Arthaus, Road Dog Show Pros, and McShred Prints.
